The gaming industry in Europe is growing in all gaming fields, and it is expected to generate up to EUR 180 billion by 2021. During 2018 over 2 billion people were engaged in various types of gaming activities from console and casinos to mobile gaming.
In Germany, The main legal framework governing online gambling is the Interstate Treaty for Gambling. However gambling law falls primarily to the 16 individual states. Germany’s State Treaty will begin a new more streamlined process to regulate operators entering the German sports betting market. Between January 2020 and 2021 Germany will offer operators licenses for online sport’s betting with a renewal period for the next coming years. Whether online casinos will be included in any new agreements for all 16 German states is yet to be determined. As such, Schleswig-Holstein is currently the only German state to license and regulate online casinos.
Officials from all German states are expected to present proposals for online casinos by October this year as Germany hosts some of the best online gambling venues and is listed under Best Casinos, one of the biggest gaming authority directories. Germany plans to strengthen the industry as a whole offering a regulated market open to operators from Germany as well as the EU. In Germany identification and verification rules are prescribed under the Federal Financial Supervisory Authority, BaFin, which prescribes video identification for obliged entities, including operators of games of chance. Under the Fifth EU Anti-Money Laundering Directive, gaming service providers will continue to follow video identification regulations for AML and KYC obligations in Germany.
