Player Spikes in Big Sport Events

Covid 19 has impacted the way many businesses work today, and one of the key factors that changed for many of our clients at IDnow were reported spikes in remote verification. The pandemic impacted how we onboard users. The biggest question that came up was how do operators’ onboard players remotely and can IDnow handle the capacity of the volume spikes?

Since March 2020 Covid 19 not only transformed the world and how we operate, but also player behaviour. This is exactly the transition we have observed in online gambler behaviours. Data shows that the online market increase by 29% active users and 7% of players were made up of inactive accounts. What brought on this change?

Businesses adapted very quickly to respond to the pandemic however there were some businesses that unfortunately suffered for not planning; and therefore, some operators were able to leverage this advantage more than others. There are clear differentiators between reactive and proactive business behaviours. Player behaviour changed as bets went up by 12% due to operators creating longer-lasting online slots i.e., longer than an hour.

In May 2020, operators who were active in regulated markets were instructed to perform extra checks including affordability checks, the prevention of reverse withdrawals, and restrictions on bonus offers which came into play eventually on October 31st, 2020.

In a webinar we held with Martin Lycka, SVP Compliance at GVC-Entain, he was able to share his views on responsible gambling:
“Like any other market responsible gambling is critical to its long-term sustainability and this will be the case in Germany. Operators such as Entain and others have rolled out very sophisticated responsible gambling processes, policies and protocols.”

In the run-up to the planning for the Euro’s, there are many other factors that were considered from the end-user experience.

  1. How to keep fans engaged while they are unable to physically attend matches at stadiums?
  2. How to create a safe and engaging environment for supporters?
  3. How to enable youth and amateurs to keep playing and enjoying football?

Euro 2021 football tournament is expecting a spike in volume by up to 5 to 10 times more than usual. The excitement is visible as the absence of last year’s Grand National also had a clear impact, with only the virtual race running in 2020.

Grand national this year broke records shared from sportsbook apps and across exchanges, with £92.8m traded on the big race, which made up 71% of the £131m bets across the three-day Festival. This represented a 28% increase from 2019.

Cheltenham Festival broke records with £210m in total betting volume; with more bettors at home, the online betting industry is experiencing spikes more than ever before.

Sports has had major setbacks by pausing plans for the partial return of fans to stadiums on the 1st of October 2020 and this due to the rapid spike in Covid-19 cases. It will continue to add growing fears that clubs could go out of business due to potent spikes, and we might continue to see this with the ease of lockdown.

IDnow is prepping for the Euro’s focusing on the user experience and rising cases of fraud. From an operator’s perspective, how does IDnow ensure that players are verified satisfactorily while maintaining the operator’s player conversions? There was a lot of effort made by gambling operators to stay on top of constant changes in online gambling regulations with new guidelines. They have shared that KYC providers like IDnow are seen as a positive influence and KYC facilitator.

IDnow is an identity verification company and has been serving customers with their compliance requirements in some of the most heavily regulated markets with a platform of secure and efficient products. IDnow has seen processes move forward by developing close relationships in Germany with the youth protection ministry. We have worked diligently to ensure our products are compliant with KYC requirements. Read more: Online Gambling regulation in DACH – an overview
